back to Q

sorry, i didn't forget about the Q

the question was:
the risk of HIV from snorting? the keywords used in the search didn't specify snorting what.
i assume it's snorting an illicit drug like cocaine.

I'm not sure if there's alot of medical literature online but based on what i know about HIV transmission (i'm not an HIV expert), i would have to say the risk is verrrrrry small.
Unless, the substance one is snorting is mixed with blood from an HIV positive person.

HIV is transmitted when bodily fluids are exchanged. IV drug use and sex are ways of transmitting the virus to another person. If you share a "dirty" needle with an HIV positive person, you are exposing yourself to that person's blood. With sex, you are exchanging other kinds of bodily fluids. Other people at risk are those who WORK with blood and needles. A needle prick can potential pass the virus to you if the blood is infected with HIV.

This Q promoted me to look things up on oral sex and HIV transmission......there are a few cases of it. The kind of sex that has higher rates of transmission is still anal sex and penile-vaginal sex. The common thing they all have is the virus has access to mucosal surfaces of the body. If these mucosal surfaces have any open cuts/lesions, it is easier for the virus to enter your body. More reason to use condoms or some barrier to protect against HIV. Besides, one should be using condoms or other barriers like dental dams if you are engaging in oral sex. One can get all sorts of other STDs from oral sex like herpes, syphilis, genital warts, and gonorrhea. There has been a resurgence of new syphilis cases in the city of Chicago. You don't want to end up with a sore throat because your throat is infected with gonorrhea. Yuck! Sorry if some of you find that image too disgusting......so be safe. Oral sex is not safe sex.

I can't imagine why anyone would take the risk of unprotected sex. Thinking about the various STD's that could result should be enough to kill the mood.

it is most likely to have unprotected sex when an individual is under the influence of any illicit drug therefore some connection with snorting cocaine and AIDS/HIV. unfortunetly i see this alot where i work. the popular drug now a days though is meth, scary little cheap drug!!! CHEAP being the keyword here...because it is so cheap people tend to use it more. i have to agree with zataod, there are so many STD's out there that it makes you want to not have sex!!

many teens know very little about sex...many don't know about STDs/HIV. the sad thing about HIV is that many people forget that it is STILL a problem now...it is not something from the 80s.

more teens are having oral sex and don't realize the dangers of that as well

I've heard and read that many teenagers don't even consider oral sex to be real sex. Sadly, we live in a society that wants to keep teens ignorant, thinking that ignorant teens will be less likely to engage in sex. I think if we valued truth and education, we would find that educated teens would make much better decisions than we expect.

Oral sex sure is fun though. ;-)

I would imagine that if we would actually teach comprehensive, practical safe-sex in public schools we might avoid problems like, say, teenagers not considering oral sex to be real sex.

But I guess we'll have to wait until the 08 elections for that to even become a possibility.
*sigh*
