Speaking up

I was a shy child,
not a dumb child,
but a bright child.

The shy child worried
about speaking up.
What if i sound...

foolish

stupid

often afraid
to speak up
even if i knew the correct answer .
Afraid of the attention
focused on me,
zeroing on me.
Insecure about
speaking up
because it might
alienate me
from the rest.

"she's a smart kid"
let's not hang out with her
"she's a smart kid"
she isn't cool
"she' a smart kid"
she doesn't know how to have fun

Over the years,
I have found my voice,
embraced my voice.
Now, I fight back
when the shy child
tries to emerge.
If I have something to say
I want to speak up.
Wonderful things happen
when I speak up.

Cindylu,
hola!! Yeah, smart kids are unfairly stereotyped.
