miracles?

the medical staff told the family
they didn't know how he survived.
most soldiers in those circumstances
would have been killed

guess several have died
that way
from those injuries

but he didn't.............

i imagine
the young soldier
wakes up in the hospital
startled
by the sounds
the beeps , the rings , the alarms
on telemetry

is he under fire?
under attack?
waking up in darkness
because the lights
are turned off
in the ICU,
on telemetry,
at night .
a faint glow
from the nurses' station
from the computers

he must wake up
startled
if only briefly,
wondering if he is
still in the desert

the nurse might walk in
and reassure
"you are in America
you are safe
you are in America
you are home...."

America...
safe...
home...

as the soldier drifts off
into REM
where dreams await
where nightmares await....

the lights won't come on
until the next nursing shift begins
after sunrise.
