the Promised Land

This portion of "I see the Promised Land" always stirs so much emotion in me:

Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people will get to the promised land. And I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.

I was feeling pretty optomistic until this girl who is a law student started to argue with me on my blog that all illegal aliens should be deported and don't even have the right to protest... and this is coming from a female african american law student... you know, someone who benifited by the speech you quoted... a speech given at the very place where yesterdays protest took place... it's pretty depressing.

so, last night I was downloading music and decided that I need to check out that Kill Hannah band you're always pimping.... I don't know why I never checked them out when you talked about them before, but I should have... Anyway I now have like 7 of their songs and they're all good- better than good really... so thanks- I officially owe you one.

WMW,
that would be one sad day
when we look around
and see that no one truly cares.
Sad day for Americans...Sad day for humanity, period.

DCNats,
yes, it can be depressing when other Latinos...other minorities don't see how this is a human rights issue....civil rights issue....there is alot more at stake here than "just kicking out the illegals".

As an African American person mentioned on the NPR show i was listening to, Blacks need to stop looking at Latinos with a white supremacist lens....and Latinos need to stop looking at Blacks with a white supremacist lens. we can be more powerful if we Work together than being divided by the majority.

for so long, i have been baffled by the tension/fights between latinos and blacks. it makes me sick to see that we can't see how similar we are...that we have similar issues/struggles. Of course they are not 100% identical...but very similar.

there's an interesting exhibit in the mexican fine arts museum in chicago right now focusing on how blacks are part of Mexico's history. it also examines blacks and latinos struggles for equality in the USA. This exhibit runs until september 2006....if you ever come to chicago.
