July 20 1836 — Birth of Sir Thomas Clifford Allbutt,
an English physician who invented the short clinical thermometer
Until Allbutt's invention in 1866,
a patient had to hold a foot-long thermometer for 20 minutes!
Albutt's 6" portable thermometer could take a temperature in just 5 minutes.
In 1916, at the age of 80, he was elected president of the British Medical Association.

haha. thank goodness 'cause one hour when your sick can seem like an eternity.
CC,
and there's no way a sick, irritable child would hold still long enough to take the temp with the foot long thermometer!
