I've commented before how I am trying to write more in spanish.
Although I can be comfortable speaking spanish, I struggle to read and write it. Whenever I see an long article or a novel in spanish, I want to run away. I read so slow when it comes to spanish. But I've come up with a plan to practice my spanish.... to improve my spanish reading skills and hopefully my spanish writing skills.
I have to thank my father for the idea.....he is the one who showed me a book the other day...."Mama Goose". It was what I needed. I liked it because it was a bilingual book.
Yeah....I'm going to begin reading children's books in spanish. The great thing about "Mama Goose" is I get the nursery rhymes in spanish and english. If I don't recognize a spanish word, I can peek at the english translation.
This is really the best thing for me. I get too frustrated when I see paragraphs and paragraphs of neverending pages of spanish words. This is perfect because I read poems/short entries AND get to look at pretty pictures. I've already finished 2 books......."Gathering the Sun: an Alphabet in Spanish and English" which had short poems for every letter in the spanish alphabet.....and "Mi Primer Libro de Dichos/My First Book of Proverbs".
Some of my favourite dichos from the book were:
"Atascate ahora que hay lodo"
"El que no monta no cae"
"Quien canta su mal espanta"

i have to aplaud you. it is good to see you wanting to learn to write it. i am teaching my kids spanish. let me know what books you use and where you got them.
CC,
i wonder if i'm ready for Like Water for Chocolate...maybe not....maybe i need to read more short poems and nursery rhymes ;)
Santiago,
the only books i've read were the ones i listened here and in the post with the 8yearold's poem. But i need a nice spanish grammar book. I don't "know" the rules of grammar for spanish. but the books i was reading I got from the public library. If ur kids don't normally hang out at the public library, they should especially if ur area has a nice library. I love libraries. Unfortunately, I grew up with a CRAPPY one in my hood. When i was in college?, the hood got a new library...still crappy because they only moved to the shopping stripmall. No new gorgeous building for our library...not like the other neighborhoods that got spanking new libraries. Our barrio was cheated....the kids are cheate.
