after all these years, it still has a negative connotation. Even i don't like saying it. I do prefer another phrase that was used by one of the panelists tonight...."women power"
what does one think about when driving home after a discussion on Latinas and feminism?
i found myself thinking of .....
him
a man?
yep.....thoughts of him.....
along with some thoughts on my experiences
as a woman, as a latina, as a professional from a working class background.
but there were lots of thoughts about him
i love the man he is..........he never ceases to amaze me.
He is a diamond in the rough. Men can learn a thing or two from him.
Why would i think of him? Because part of this struggle for women power needs to take into account the men and boys in our lives. During the discussion, people mentioned the importance of talking to our girls and exposing them to feminism......but we need to reach our boys. Our boys...men....need to change their views/ideas on girls/women. They need to challenge the stereotypes that they see in the media....the stereotypes that are handed down to them from other men in their families....via friends. Yes, we need to reach out to girls...young women. We need to cultivate self-esteem and confidence in young women. We need to generate opportunities for young women so they can grow and explore the world. But we can't forget about the boys.
and i return to
thoughts of him
i love
the man
he is...
he is an
exceptional man.
he values the woman i am
he values the person i am
he sees me as an equal
he doesn't try to censor me
not even the artist me!
i admire him for that
i love him for that

I very much agree that it's starts at home with the kids- and the boys just as much as the girls.
you can cultivate a girl's self esteem all you want... but until we teach the boys then the job is only half done... and by the way, It's a real shame the way some Conservaties and the "Moral" Majority have a attached a negative connotation to the words liberal and feminism.
Happy St. Patty's day!
er ... late....
*glares at empty beer bottle*
Aberrant T,
thanks, even thou i didn't have any green beer :)
DCnats,
all of us (women and men) need to make sure to teach boys about equality...respect. yeah, liberal became a bad word too just like feminism. Both are really about doing the right thing....doin what is morally right.
i'm looking at comments and find it interesting that only men commented.
nice to see men listening and engaging in the discussion
