Stand Up for Women

I received this message in a recent email. Please read and support women......the women in your lives.

The U.S. House of Representatives Budget Committee is working on its budget resolution. Although they are expecting to finish their work by next week, there are some disagreements between moderate and conservative members about the nature of the budget cuts. Remember - the last round of budget cuts passed the House by only 2 votes so all calls can really make a difference. After the committee votes, the resolution then goes to the House immediately. We have to keep the pressure on. We must continue to speak out against cutting these programs as they disproportionately affect women and their families.

Here are some details of what could be proposed in the Fiscal Year 2007 budget:
Elimination of WEEA which enforces Title IX (sex equity education programs);
Cuts in child care, which would serve 650,000 fewer children;
Cuts in child support enforcement;
Cuts in vocational education;
Elimination of the Perkins school loan program for low-income students trying to pay for college;
Cuts in services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault;
Cuts in school lunch programs, Women Infants and Children (WIC), and other nutritional programs for low-income women and their families;
Elimination of prenatal and preventive health care; and
Cuts in Medicaid for low income, people with disabilities and elderly.

Our representatives must reject this budget proposal and must instead invest women and children.

TODAY, call 1- (800) 459-1887 to be connected toll-free to the Capitol Switchboard or use the direct line numbers at the end of this email.

Suggested Message:

I am calling to urge Rep. __________ to vote against the budget resolution if it forces cuts in nutrition aid, health care, education, training, housing, and other essential services for women and their family. If the funding is as low as the President's budget, vulnerable people, from infants to the elderly, will lose needed services most of the cuts will disproportionately fall on women and girls. Please do not sacrifice the health, safe, and economic security of women and their families.

OR dial their direct lines (not toll-free).
